I recently visited a public school where students sat on the floor, their backs bent over notebooks, trying to write. The classroom had no chairs or desks—just a few wooden benches that weren’t enough for everyone. Despite these conditions, their teacher stood at the front, passionately explaining a lesson.

I couldn’t help but wonder: How can we expect children to thrive in such an environment?

Education is a Community Effort

We often think of education as the government’s responsibility, but the reality is different. Schools don’t operate in isolation—they exist within communities. When public schools lack essential resources, it’s not just a problem for the students; it affects all of us.

Think about it. The children struggling in under-resourced schools today will grow up to be part of our society. They are meant to be the doctors, engineers, business owners, and leaders of tomorrow. If they don’t receive a solid foundation, how can they build a better future for themselves and their families?

What Can We Do?

The good news is that small actions from individuals and communities can make a big difference. Here’s how you can help:

• Volunteer Your Time — Can you spare an hour to mentor or read to children? Many schools would benefit from extra hands.
• Donate Learning Materials — Textbooks, notebooks, pencils, and even used furniture can transform a classroom.
• Support Teachers — A kind word, a small donation, or even sharing their challenges on social media can raise awareness.
• Engage with Local Schools — Attend PTA meetings, ask how you can help, and be involved. Schools that feel community support perform better.

A Shared Responsibility

That day in the classroom, I imagined how different things could be if the community stepped in—if businesses sponsored chairs, if local carpenters helped repair broken desks, if parents and neighbors came together to make learning easier.
